Review Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Unique in its style in the country. As a result of the consecration of the Republic to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the idea of building a National Basilica was born on the initiative of Fr. Manuel José Proaño. Once the task was undertaken, the Riobambeños began to carry stones for the foundations from the Chibunga River, as well as from other places near the city of Riobamba. The financial contributions evidenced the generosity of Catholics. Brother Ramón Lecanda made the plans considering the Basilica of San Ignacio de Loyola as a model. On August 15, 1883, with all solemnity, the first stone was laid. Overcoming time, the efforts and sacrifices of the Riobambeños and the Jesuits, the Basilica is inaugurated on June 9, 1915. José Félix Heredia cites that a new petition takes place on April 30, 1639 before the King of Spain for the opening of a school and college; and in 1644 an inn was opened. In 1687, the King of Spain issued the Certificate authorizing the foundation of the Jesuit College in Riobamba, but it was revoked due to insufficient financial resources. Finally the license for the foundation is granted in 1689; the School is established where the inn worked. The first Rector was Fr. Chicar. In 1767, the Jesuits were expelled by order of the King of Spain, Carlos III, and 22 of them who were in Riobamba were arrested.
