As a result of the consecration of the Republic to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the idea of building a National Basilica was born on the initiative of Fr. Manuel José Proaño. Once the task was undertaken, the Riobambeños began to carry stones for the foundations from the Chibunga River, as well as from other places near the city of Riobamba. The financial contributions evidenced the generosity of Catholics. Brother Ramón Lecanda made the plans considering the Basilica of San Ignacio de Loyola as a model. Chapel of the Sacrilege of Riobamba
Chapel of Sacrilege Riobamba In this chapel took place the sacrilege of May 4, 1897 perpetrated by the pottery troops and the assassination of Rector P. Emilio Moscoso S.J. In the first decade of the 20th century, Fr. Francisco Villagómez S.J. began the reparatory acts before that desecration, later being declared this church as "Expiatory Temple". Eclectic in style, the tower stands out with its 4-sphere clock and the frescoes painted inside. The Society of Jesus has an old and close relationship with Riobamba. According to the historian Alfredo Costales Cevallos, in 1622 the Cabildo and the inhabitants of the city asked the Father Provincial to establish a school. José Félix Heredia cites that a new petition takes place on April 30, 1639 before the King of Spain for the opening of a school and college; and in 1644 an inn was opened. In 1687, the King of Spain issued the Certificate authorizing the foundation of the Jesuit College in Riobamba, but it was revoked due to insufficient financial resources. Finally the license for the foundation is granted in 1689; the School is established where the inn worked. The first Rector was Fr. Chicar. In 1767, the Jesuits were expelled by order of the King of Spain, Carlos III, and 22 of them who were in Riobamba were arrested. After the earthquake of 1797, the Jesuits returned to Riobamba and thanks to the contribution of Fr. José Veloz y Suarez, the Colegio San Felipe Neri was founded in May 1836.
